ELECTION OF 1824
This election was very important because popular vote counted. Jackson won the popular vote, but did not have enough electoral college votes to win. He needed 32 more votes. The Twelfth Amendment was called upon to finish this. The House of Representatives had to make the choice. Henry Clay, had the fewest votes out of the four, so he was eliminated leaving, Jackson, Adams and Crawford. Clay, who was Speaker of the House, would still have a major say in who won this election. Clay and his supporters gave their votes to Adams and he won. After this, Adams appointed Clay his Secretary of State. Jackson called this completely unacceptable and stated the election was fixed. Needless to say, Andrew Jackson did not like Adams after the 1824 election. (Miller Center)
